Soy candles are made from soy wax, which is hydrogenated soybean oil. Soy wax was invented in 1992 by Michael Richards who was looking for a cheaper alternative to beeswax. As he entered the candle industry in 1991 he realized there was a growing demand for natural wax candles. Since its development in the mid 90s, soy wax has become a popular medium for making candles. Candle lovers who are health conscious and/or adversely affected by breathing chemicals prefer soy wax because it is an organic compound that releases no toxins when burned. Paraffin contains 11 documented toxins, 2 are carcinogenic. The American Lung Association has warned consumers of unhealthy indoor air quality from burning candles containing petroleum byproducts.Soy wax is non-carcinogenic.
